Kitty Hawk Park and Kitty Hawk Woods Reserve are two hidden gems nestled in the heart of the Outer Banks in the town of Kitty Hawk. Offering a unique escape from the bustling beaches, these natural sanctuaries provide visitors with opportunities for outdoor adventures, relaxation, and exploration.
Kitty Hawk Park features a covered picnic shelter, a playground, a dog park, a walking trail, and restrooms. There is also a 5,000 sq. ft. Skate Park which is well enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
The Park serves as the gateway to Kitty Hawk Woods Reserve, a sprawling maritime forest that spans over 1,800 acres. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in the beauty of the coastal landscape, with miles of hiking and biking trails winding through lush woodlands and marshes. As you venture deeper into the reserve, you'll encounter diverse ecosystems teeming with wildlife, including ospreys, herons, and even the elusive red wolf.
One of the highlights of Kitty Hawk Woods Reserve is the access to outdoor activities away from the beach. Visitors can kayak or paddleboard along the tranquil waters of the Kitty Hawk Bay, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding marshes and estuaries. Fishing enthusiasts will also appreciate the opportunity to cast a line in search of flounder, trout, and other local species.
Parking is available behind the playground at the north end of Woods Road. Public access to the interior of the woods is at the end of Eckner Street, Amadas Road, and Birch Lane. High Bridge Creek can be accessed by boat from the public boat ramp on Bob Perry Road.
You can also visit Sandy Run Park at 4343 The Woods Rd., which not only provides access to the Kitty Hawk Woods Reserve, but also gives visitors access to a half basketball court and picnic areas equipped with grills at the front of the park. A bridge links to a half-mile nature walk loop over Sandy Run, featuring two gazebos with pedestrian and canoe/kayak access, a nature observation tower, a fishing pier (catch and release only), picnic tables, benches, and interpretive signage. A small children’s play area and two fitness stations complete the small park. While you may see turtles in and around the park and amenities, please do not feed them!
Whether you're exploring the wooded trails of Kitty Hawk Woods Reserve or enjoying a day at the Park with a picnic and games, these natural treasures offer a welcome retreat for vacationers looking to connect with nature and experience a different of the Outer Banks.
