Outer Banks Promise

Outer Banks Blue is excited to announce participation in the Outer Banks Promise! As an accommodation provider, we’re often the first point of contact for visitors. A guest's vacation begins long before their arrival, and as trusted local experts, it’s up to us to make sure their OBX getaway gets off to a good start. To help guide us in our mission to provide the best possible stay, we’ve promised “to encourage appreciation of our local community through conscious conversation.”

What is the Outer Banks Promise?
The Outer Banks Promise is an initiative led by the Visitors Bureau as part of the Dare County Tourism Board’s long-range tourism management plan. The goal is “to ensure that tourism preserves—and even benefits—the environment, culture, and quality of life for residents while enhancing visitor experiences.”  To do this, The Outer Banks Promise asks residents and guests to make these pledges:

  • Discover this land of history and inspiration with a spirit of kindness and appreciation.
  • Turn “what ifs” into “let’s prepare.”
  • Pack it in, pack it out. Leave no trace.
  • Wander with wonder, sticking to roads and paths.
  • Love the beach, respect the ocean.
  • Be a wildlife star, observing animals safely from afar.
  • Support local. Small acts have big impacts.

Show your support by visiting their website to make your promise. You can even download a .pdf promise sign to make a personal commitment, just make sure to print and share it on social with #OBXpromise!

What does “conscious conversation” mean?

Our personal commitment at Outer Banks Blue is “to encourage appreciation of our local community through conscious conversation.” In addition to the 7 core pledges, we believe it’s important to take a moment to remember why we do what we do. Our effort to provide a relaxing experience with a local touch is inspired by our love of this unique destination we call home, but managing hundreds of vacation rentals every week requires a lot of moving parts, and coordinating the many tasks involved can quickly feel routine. So, we’ve asked our team to look for opportunities to connect the routine of daily tasks with the reasons for doing them and to share when possible.

For example, a common maintenance request involves air conditioning. Our response starts with having the guest check that all windows and doors are closed and that the thermostat settings are correct. This is not just the first step, it is a reminder to be energy-conscious… but do we take a moment to remind ourselves before troubleshooting? If not, we missed a great opportunity to bring up energy conservation! The same goes for our trash relief service. When our property service team sets out to clean up a property with overflowing trash, do we mention that our motivation is walking along a clean beach on our day off? We should!

We’re also reminding guests and owners that the Outer Banks is a small local community. Thanks to hard work and long hours we’re able to host an incredible number of visitors, but sometimes that means service takes a little longer. It also means our team is often going above and beyond with limited resources! Communication is at the center of our service model, and our guests and owners will agree that working together to manage expectations makes a better experience for everyone. We hope our community-focused responses carry over into our guests' next interaction with a local business, leading to a healthier environment, culture, and quality of life for residents and visitors!
