This week on Memory Monday we reflect on another big event that occurred on the Outer Banks in 2008. The release of the major motion picture "Nights in Rodanthe."
Starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane, the filming of this movie set the Outer Banks community on its ear in 2007 when it was filmed here locally. The story of a doctor looking for redemption, and a jilted woman meeting in the most unlikeliest of places, a Bed and Breakfast on the Outer Banks. Their paths cross, and their lives are changed forever.
The movie was just released on DVD within the last week, and it reminded all Outer Bankers what a great experience it was to be involved with a real Hollywood movie! Outer Banks Blue's maintenance technician Ryan Lewis was one of many "extras" on the movie (look for him in the background when they are having the oyster roast, and when they are in a bar playing pool). Ryan has many stories to tell about how the buffet was always open for the people involved with the movie, how everyone was so down to earth, and how he mentioned Outer Banks Blue Realty Services to anyone on the set who would listen. We all have fond memories of our encounters with Richard Gere, Diane Lane, and the best selling novel by Nicholas Sparks whether it be Ryan's cameo appearance in the film, the person we know who was standing in for Richard Gere when he was racing down the oceanfront road, the authentic banker ponies running past the stars, or just the amazing cinematography that did the Outer Banks proud.
The best part of the movie however was the untouched scenery of the Outer Banks. It is why we live here, it is why Hollywood came here, and it is why the movie was a success. Here's to Night's in Rodanthe! Definitely a worthy entry to the Memory Monday part of our blog!
